Measure your waist/hip where you want to wear the belt. The number provided in the size chart is where the last hole of the belt is. For instance in the size M the last hole is at 39".
Alternatively you can add 3 inches to your off the rack trouser size. If you wear size 36 (US/UK standard size) a belt that is at least 39 inches long would be your best bet.
